about

I grew up in a small town where field burning was a normal agricultural event every year in late summer. Something about the image of a wild burning smoke-filled field that I couldn't see through, but could feel the intense heat and power of has always stayed with me. This song is about feeling the intensity of love as it sometimes sneaks up, arrives at our feet, licks our heels, burns wildly, smolders, and is oftentimes difficult to understand...but "I feel it."

lyrics

tonight you said to me
'i think i better go'
i said
'it's getting late'
you think i oughta know
better by now
i oughta know better by now

'wait up' you holler out
'ill walk ya to your car'
'all right' is my reply
'it's not really that far'

and i'm digging around
for my damn keys
thinking that i oughta know better now

and you say
'did i ever tell you bout
when i worked in the corn fields?
i drove my old pickup truck
till it came off its wheels
and i'd walk for miles and miles
you know all you could really see
were those dusty grey gold rows
i don't know why i am telling you all this
i just thought you might like to know'

and i said
'i don't suppose i ever heard that one before
but i would stay up all night just listening for more
and i love to hear your stories
wish back then i could have been
your girl next door
honestly i wish you could tell me right now baby
what the hell i'm still standing here for'

could you tell me
what's the point today in talking honestly
when you say just what you mean
and hurt everyone between
i don't see an easy compromise
if i can't tell it to ya the way i feel babe

and honestly i wish we were having this conversation
in a dusty corn field
